What the Service Is
Pharmacy First at Weelsby View Pharmacy is an NHS-funded service designed to give you fast, convenient access to healthcare for a range of common conditions—without the need to visit your GP. Instead of waiting days or weeks for an appointment, you can walk into either of our Grimsby branches and speak directly with one of our trained clinical pharmacists. These pharmacists are qualified to assess symptoms, make a diagnosis, and in many cases provide prescription medication on the spot.
The service is completely confidential and takes place in a private consultation room where you can speak openly about your symptoms. Our pharmacists follow NHS clinical guidelines to ensure safe, evidence-based care. This means you receive the same level of assessment and treatment you would expect from general practice, delivered in a more accessible and time-efficient way.
Pharmacy First was introduced to reduce pressure on already busy GP surgeries and to improve patient access to same-day care. At Weelsby View Pharmacy, we take pride in offering a warm, reliable, and professional environment where every patient is treated with respect, compassion, and attention to detail.
What Conditions It Covers & How the Service Works
Pharmacy First covers several common conditions that can often be treated safely and effectively in a pharmacy setting. The conditions currently included in the NHS service are:
-
Sore throats
-
Sinusitis
-
Ear infections (for adults and children aged 1+)
-
Shingles
-
Infected insect bites
-
Impetigo
-
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women aged 16–64
If you are experiencing symptoms linked to any of these conditions, you can walk into the pharmacy and request a Pharmacy First consultation. No appointment is needed, though calling ahead may shorten waiting times during busy periods.
When you arrive, you’ll be taken to a consultation room. The pharmacist will ask questions about your symptoms, your medical history, any medications you take, and how long you’ve been unwell. Depending on the condition, the pharmacist may carry out a physical assessment such as examining your throat, ears, or skin.
FAQs About Pharmacy First
Do I need an appointment?
No. Pharmacy First is a walk-in service. You can visit either branch during opening hours.
Is the service free?
Yes. The consultation is funded by the NHS. If medication is supplied, normal NHS prescription charges apply unless you are exempt.
Can children use Pharmacy First?
Yes. Many conditions included in the service can be assessed in children aged one and above. Our pharmacists will guide you depending on the age and symptoms of the child.
Will I always receive medication?
Not necessarily. Medication is only supplied if it is clinically appropriate. In some cases, advice or self-care guidance may be all that’s needed.
What if my symptoms don’t match the list of eligible conditions?
Our pharmacists can still provide advice, but the consultation may not fall under Pharmacy First. We will explain your available options.
